The Sno Rovers started ice racing last year on a ground based track and although only having one year's experience of drag racing, the club showed the poise of a premiere up-and-coming racing facility with the hosting of the Maine State Championship race last winter. The track, which is built entirely on land, is 60' wide by 2200' long and is iced out to 1500' and then groomed snow out to 2200'. Brian Wiley, the KASRA Race Facilitator stated "This track was also built for grass drags as well and we plan on having a series in the summer of 2011". A water hydrant was installed next to the track for flooding and will allow the Club to keep this massive sheet of ice perfect for racing. The club also purchased a second Zamboni ice grooming machine this summer to assist the one it already had. Stanley stated, "These two machines are what make this track stand alone in being the best ice drag racing surface in the Northeast".
Wiley stated, "The track is located in sight of the Sno Rovers facility in Medway and because of this, all the necessary services and comforts can be provided to spectators and racers". The club is a spacious two-story building with plenty of room to relax and get warm. The Club kitchen which has a well known reputation for good food and drink is currently getting expanded including the addition of take-out windows along with the same food service inside as well. There are toilet facilities upstairs and down in the club, and plenty of room for race registration and race event activities. There is also handicapped viewing of the racing in the warmth of the club as well. The spectator area next to the track has bleachers and large viewing decks along with plenty of standing room for comfortable viewing of the races. A control tower with the entire computer-controlled starting line equipment and public announcement system make the track complete and quite professional in nature to what the needs are for presenting a major race series.
Inspired by their recent trip to the Epping Grass Drag Racing facility and the 3-day Northeast Grass Drag Race series event both Stanley and Wiley are excited about the announcement the KASRA will now be hosting a major International Ice Race this January. The race will be called The Northeast Snowmobile Drag Racing Winter-Nationals and will be held on a 3-day schedule beginning January 21st with a "Test and Tune Event" 4-10 p.m. Friday and on Saturday and Sunday with the regular scheduled drag race events. Major sponsorships are being sought and obtained for what KASRA believes will be a $10K total prize money event. Wiley stated "KASRA expects, based on our feedback at Epping that we will see most of the major Snowmobile race teams and drivers attending from Canada and throughout the Northeast United States as the had everything good to say about our facility and the people involved from the Club. Teams attending this race most likely would use this race as a tune-up for the Snowmobile Ice Drag Racing World Series event scheduled for early February in Port Huron, Michigan.
Stanley wend on to say "KASRA/EBSR has not left a stone unturned in building the best snowmobile drag racing facility in the Northeast. KASRA will need to depend on the major sponsorship funding to help with the necessary funding of running a five race points series. The "Winter-National" race held in January is an added payout race and will feature many special award payouts such as "Fastest ET and Speed" awards along "Best Reaction Time" and all scheduled Class, 1st Place award money. The standard 100% payback will also be awarded for each class winner each day. Stanley went on to say "Last year we raised $7500 for the purse money of the State Championship. This year we would like to exceed this if possible. We expect to draw major teams that local spectators would not normally see, some of which are capable of running in the 130-140 mph bracket in just over 4 seconds at 660 feet." KASRA also plans on having a major trophy award "The Katahdin" for each class winner at the end of the five point race season.
Wiley stated "There are several benefits of purchasing a sponsorship with KASRA. We intend to fully make aware to the public and our race team members who our sponsors are and their level of support. We would also like to include the sponsors in any awards ceremonies at each race and at the end of the season along with special race sponsorships at the Winter-Nationals. The EBSR Club and KARSA members are really excited about this upcoming race season and our recent affiliation with ISR who has been serving over 100 Racing Clubs and Organizations in North America, the (4) major manufacturers of snowmobiles, major parts distributors and dealers, and the snowmobile racing community for more than 29 years."
